North Syracuse, N.Y. — A student was found to have an airsoft gun, knife and a mask after being dropped off at North Syracuse Junior High on Tuesday, school officials said.
The student, who was not identified, was dropped off at school by their parents when school officials noticed the student behaving suspiciously, according to a statement Michael A. Schiedo, interim superintendent of schools, sent to students, parents and staff. He did not include an age, grade, or gender of the student in his statement.
The student was detained and searched leading to the weapons being found, Schiedo said.
The student was removed from the school grounds and the school did not go into lockdown, he said.
The Onondaga County Sheriff‘s Office responded and handled the case, he said. The child was detained and then released to their parents, said Tom Newton, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.
Counseling will be available at the school for students and staff, Schiedo said.
Schiedo’s statement did not say if the student was charged.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
